Mid August 2026 update

  • Very strong El Nino is real but that does not mean drought in SA, and especially so this year

  • Localised dry spells through spring will still occur, mitigated by warmer Indian and lack of a sustained Positive IOD

  • Major volatility through spring with thunderstorm activity above average

  • Still above average frost risk in any high pressure, especially if we get colder air

  • Dominant westerly flow and cooler mid-levels tightening jetstream, increasing damaging wind potential in stronger events

  • Wet interior will continue to have a positive feedback through SA/VIC with more moisture for systems
